Sometime around the end of the 2012 season, Marcus Davis went quiet.
The dual-threat quarterback for American Heritage didn’t reveal much about his recruitment when asked, other than with responses along the lines of “it’s the same as it has been.” Yet the end of his recruiting process was nothing routine or ordinary.
On Sunday, Davis (5-10, 170, No. 9 on the Big Board) ended a whirlwind relationship with Auburn, which started Wednesday when co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Dameyune Craig came to American Heritage to meet Davis for the first time. By Sunday morning, Davis committed to Auburn.
Before Auburn entered the picture, Arkansas was the program du jour for Davis, who entertained a new offer from the Razorbacks as they descended on South Florida with a new coaching staff in search of fresh talent for a meager 2013 class. In the fall, West Virginia, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest pushed for Davis the most, and he visited Wake Forest’s campus in September.
But all that interest seemingly subsided after the season, with Wake Forest staying consistent. Many around Davis thought he’d play there until Arkansas came along. Davis was excited about Arkansas’ interest, but Auburn swept him off his feet.
He threw for 1,019 yards, 15 touchdowns and two interceptions this fall for Heritage, which finished 11-1 and reached the Class 3A regional finals. He also ran for 846 yards and eight touchdowns. He’ll play receiver at Auburn.
